Today I came across a very easy to follow blog post titled “How to Refine Your Search in Google?”. I was amazed at the information on how any one of us can refine our google search queries and we can save time on our research projects.

I am sharing some of the tips which are presented here as these are so good that every one can benefit from this:

Here are few easy and valuable tips to refine your google search results:

1. Don’t worry about capitalization?
2. Word order makes the difference when it comes to searching information!
3. ‘And’ is assumed by the google, so if you don’t put it; it’s alright.
4. Use the ‘Or’ operator if you want to conduct search for pages that include one word or another word, but not neccessarily both.
5. Common words like ‘and, the, a etc.’ are automatically excluded by google while searching. For example, ‘how a toaster works’ may give the same results like when I search for ‘toaster works’.
6. Exclude words from results. For example, when I search for ‘bass’ related to music, I will get the results related to fishing. To further finetune the results, my search query will be ‘bass -fish’.
7. Not sure of your search query and you want to include the similar words, you can use ~ character to include synonyms in your search.
8. Are you looking for an exact phrase? If I want to search for Jack Nicholson, then my exact search query will be “jack nicholson”.

I am also going to share with you some of the top grant related blogs here so that you can learn more before you apply for the grant.

1. Instant Grant Offers - this is a website where users do share their experiences and ranking of various grant offers is driven by the user ratings. I found this very useful. You can also read the Grant FAQs at this website to learn more about the grants.
2. US Grant Saving Solutions - I found some of the free resources here very powerful. Like any other free resources, the main challenge is to spend time to learn about it before applying it.
3. ADECA Grant Resources - This is a resource maintained by the Alabama department of economic and community affairs.
4. Education Grant Resource - This is a US government website dedicated for the education grant resources.
5. Health & Human Grant Resources - This is a website run by the US department for Health & Human Services.

There are many other US grant resources but I am always too concerned about the information overloading. So I encourage my readers to spend more quality time and focus on the above US grant resources first before jumping in the information ocean.

1.  Get Maximum from Your Credit Card! 

This is the rule number one – as you get your new credit card, don’t simply go ahead and use it. You should always have a plan for all of your credit cards. You must be thinking, what does this mean? Here are some examples of the credit card plans i.e. this credit card for grocery purchase only, another one for entertainment only, etc. Why this is important? Because you keep a better check if you keep your expenses in separate buckets. But before you go ahead and implement this plan, you should know some of the basic credit card rules.  Read more.

Today I wanted to write about how it is going to impact on our current retirement account value. As I was researching what others have written. I noticed that my favorite blog Ethical Money Talk has already written about this topic very nicely. So instead of writing about the same topic again, I decided to discuss with the blog author and took his permission to present that blog post here for your benefit.

Many of my friends are worried now as they can’t retire early now. Are you in the same shoes? Even if you are not, here are some good tips which I recommend to every one:

Tip#1: Whatever your current condition is, if you can add more money to your 401(K) account, then keep doing it. You should not stop looking your future just because the current financial crisis. You should look at the long term of your retirement account and it is the right strategy not to change your current contribution to your retirement account.

Tip#2: Don’t stop your current contribution or reduce your current contribution to 401(K) account. If you stop your contribution to retirement account, you stop missing your employer’s matching contribution. So you will miss the free money.

Tip#3: Don’t change your retirement plans due to market conditions. You should plan for a long term and don’t try to time the market. If you are fond of market timing to maximize your returns, then you should open a separate investment account and try your skills there. You should not touch your retirement account for your investment hobby.

Today I wanted to write about the impact of recent bank failure and bailout incidents in US and how it is impacting us. Before I started writing, I decided to check out if any one has written on the same topic earlier. Guess what, I found a very good article written by another blogger.

Instead of writing something which is already well written, I decided to share this blog post today with every one.

Did you watch the news where Bush said that US needs a big bailout package because the current crisis is a big problem? Well when president says that it means very serious to you and me. I am sure US economy is nothing less than the Great Depression days.

What is this bailout package? Based on the current information available, US Treasury wants to purchase the securities at a discount and then hold these securities until they can sell it for profit. Conceptually it sounds great. It’s like any investor going after bargains and then selling them when there is sufficient appreciation. So it is very workable. The only major difference here is that when US Treasury buys all these securities, they are playing with Tax Payer’s money which is yours and mine.

Do we have any choice?

It is easy to answer this question if we analyze what will happen if US government does nothing. As more and more banks continue to fail, other banks will stop extending loans. And those banks which have already failed, think of customer’s current situation as they don’t know if their savings are safe. Imagine the impact on the retirement accounts!

Secret#6: Pay your bills on time

Do you know that your credit history is built on your financial behavior? If you are wondering what financial behavior means? Then you are not alone. Financial behavior is defined by your paying habits. Do you pay on time all your utility bills, credit card bills, mortgage bill etc? Do you take more credit than what you can handle? All this explains about yourself and your financial management abilities. If you are late in making payments, then utility company or credit card company or other such companies may report about your behavior to credit bureaus who maintain your credit history. So now you see the link between your late paying habit and credit history connection. If you are wondering what would happen if it goes to credit history. Then here is a short brief of impact of such behavior on your credit. If you credit history has many such late paying behaviors indicated, it communicates that you can’t manage yourself professionally. This may impact your credit score which guides how much credit you can take from the lenders and what interest rate you will get. So when you go for shopping of mortgage, then you realize the real impact of your financial behavior. I can’t stress enough here that you should always pay on time.

Secret#7: Use credit wisely

If you are getting those pre-approved credit offers from credit card companies, then you are not alone. You should never apply for a credit card simply you are getting an offer from a credit card company. You should decide first if you really need another credit card. Do you already have credit cards? If yes, analyze how you are using these credit cards i.e. are you paying on time, are you paying full amount or just paying minimum amount every month etc. You should never use credit just because you are getting it. This could be a real trap for you if you can’t manage it. If you are already managing well and you need more for your small business or for buying appreciating assets, you should review the credit options. If you are planning to buy a plasma TV and you know that you can’t afford it, then don’t go for credit as you will get into a credit trap which can ruin your life.

Here is my grandpa’s advice for you: Use credit for buying appreciating assets and use your money for buying depreciating items.
